Whereas WILLIAM BIRLEY of Kirkham in the county Palatine of Lancaster Esquire, in the commission of the peace for the County Palatine hath represented unto the most noble Henry Charles Duke of Norfolk Earl Marshal and Heriditary Marshal of England that his family having been resident in Kirkham aforesaid and the Armorial Ensign used by him not appearing to be recorded to his family in the College of Arms he therefore requested the favour of his Grace's warrant for our granting and confirming the same with such variation as may be proper to be borne by him and his descendants of his Grandfather JOHN BIRLEY of Kirkham aforesaid merchant deceased with due and proper differences according to the Laws fo Arms: AND ASFORASMUCH as the said Earl Marshal did by the warrant under his hand and seal bearing dated tenth day of April instant authorize and direct us to grant and confirm such Armorial Ensign accordingly KNOW YE THEREFORE that the said Garter and Norroy in pursuant of His Grace's warrant and by virtue of the Letters Patent of our several offices to each of us respectively granted do by these presents grant and confirm unto the said WILLIAM BIRLEY the arms following that is to say SABLE ON A FESS ENGRAILED BETWEEN THREE BOARS HEADS COUPED ARGENT A MASCLE BETWEEN TWO CROSS CROSSLETS OF THE FIELD; and a crest upon a wreath of colours A DEMIE BOAR SABLE COLLARED ARGENT CHAIN REFLEXED OVER THE BACK OR SUPPORTING A BRANCH OF WILD TEASEL AND CHARGED ON THE SHOULDER WITH A MILLRIND ALSO ARGENT as the same are in the margin hereof more plainly depicted to be borne and used for ever hereafter by him the said WILLIAM BIRLEY and his descendants and by the other descendants of his said late Grandfather JOHN BIRLEY with due and proper differences to the Laws of Arms. IN WITNESS of the said GARTER AND NORROY Kings of Arms have to these presents subscribed Our Names and affixed the Seals of our several offices this twenty second day of April in the eleventh year of the reign of our Sovereign Lady Victoria by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland Our Defender of the Faith and in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty eight.
