Descendants of Henry GARDINER

This page contains names and data originally developed in Personal Ancestral File (PAF) and later managed and updated in Ancestral Quest. Both these programs have severe limitations in the amount of source data they can store, and the manner in which it is stored. The data was recently imported into Family Origins for Windows (v.5) with these Web page were created. It will take approximately two years, as a reasonable estimate to clean up the files and bring them to the standards possible with FOWin's capabilities. As the bulk of the information it contains came from the Ancestral File of the Family History Center at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the quality of it must be highly suspect. In particular the relationships prior to George Gardiner of Narragansett, R.I. must fall under question. They owe their existence to two published volumes by professional genealogists, and it is clear that the sponsor of the research was keen to prove descent from British nobility. From George Gardiner onward, however, there is ample supporting documentation. Particularly interesting is his long-term common law relationship with Herodias (Horod) Long Hicks who received the first divorce granted in the New Colonies in 1643 from her husband John Hicks whom she had married in England at the age of 14, and who, according to her, stole her inheritance and took off with her children. The Moriarty text, however, suggests that Mr. Hicks left Herodias for a much more old-fashioned reason. Not all the Pilgrims who emigrated to America were necessarily "Puritans"!*

*Note: See the Moriarty text which gives a very different (and much more authoritative) view of these events.
