His greater interest was in 2 CONC photography, however, and after two years he opened a photo studio in 2 CONC North Vancouver where he specialized in portraits. A better 2 CONC photographer than business man, he closed the studio and went to work 2 CONC with Bill Gibbons, a well known photographer of scenery, expecially 2 CONC for postcards. 2 CONT The relationship was strained for much of the time, and David then 2 CONC went to work for Frederick Studios where he was a "proof passer", or 2 CONC salesman taking orders from the photographs taken by a photographer 2 CONC who had gone on ahead. This gave him the opportunity to travel all 2 CONC over British Columbia and Alberta. Eventually he settled in Calgary, 2 CONC Alberta, and worked out of the company's office there. After being 2 CONC laid off just before Christmas in 1965, David was hired by a firm that 2 CONC analyzed seismic data for the oil industry. The company was 2 CONC converting from the old method of hand work to a computer based 2 CONC system. David was enroled in night school at the University of 2 CONC Calgary to learn the FORTRAN programming language, with tuition paid 2 CONC by his employer. In what later turned out to be the worst career 2 CONC decision of his life, David accepted an offer from Wally Weisbrodt, 2 CONC his former manager at Frederick Studios, to open and manage a portrait 2 CONC studio. He left the seismic company, and with it the computer 2 CONC education. Fifteen years later he regretted that decision greatly. 2 CONC After only about a year in business, the new portrait studio failed, 2 CONC and David took a job as a proof passer for another itinerant portrait 2 CONC company, this time based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She had many "one-man shows" at art galleries in 2 CONC Victoria and Vancouver, B.C., and in Honolulu Hawaii. Her preferred 2 CONC medium in her earlier life was pastel, but in later life she turned 2 CONC her interest more to oils and acrylics. She was always a specialist 2 CONC in portraiture - both of people and animals, although animals were by 2 CONC far her preference. It was often noted that she had a knack for 2 CONC capturing the personality of an animal in her pictures. During World 2 CONC War II she would drive from Victoria north on Vancouver Island to 2 CONC Cowichan Bay (about 40 miles) each weekend to go fishing for salmon 2 CONC and cod, and throughout the war this fish was one of our main sources 2 CONC of animal protein. After father's death in 1962, she moved to Honolulu 2 CONC which she has always loved. There she met and later married Charles 2 CONC Street. After his death she met and married (at age 82!) Member of the City Council 2 CONC from (cir) 1910 2 CONT 2 CONT Following text is prepared from recollection of what Studley Patrick 2 CONC Birley told David Hugh Birleyin about 1952; Barbara says some of it is 2 CONC inaccurate, but she hasn't provided any alternative information yet. 2 CONC Her main objection appears to be to geographic references, although 2 CONC she says that the "MacIntosh" segment may also be flawed: He was a 2 CONC manufacturer and had worked at "Birley's Mill" before it was sold. 2 CONC Birley's Mill (mentioned in "The Condition of The Working Class in 2 CONC England in 1832" by Engel - one of the co-founders of Communism, 2 CONC p.228) was one of the major cotton spinning mills of the Midlands of 2 CONC England. Located in the Hulme district of Manchester, England, 2 CONC adjacent to Didsbury where the large family mansion was located, the 2 CONC Birley family were widely known. "Birley's Church" as it is still 2 CONC known by the citizens of Hume was the center of the community, and a 2 CONC member of the Birley family was the presiding priest for more than one 2 CONC period. Fine textiles were produced at the mill, and the Birley 2 CONC family was always open to new ideas. One day a strange Scotsman 2 CONC brought his "wild" idea for making rubber stick to cloth to the Birley 2 CONC Mill. He had already been turned away by many mills located 2 CONC throughout the midlands, but the Birleys took him in and gave him some 2 CONC space to continue with his work. His idea was that by adding sulphur 2 CONC to the liquid rubber, and then applying heat as it was put on the 2 CONC cloth, it wouldn't melt off in hot weather. This process is now known 2 CONC as "vulcanizing" and is basic to the entire rubber industry. The 2 CONC inventor gave his name to the first successful raincoats - and in 2 CONC England it is still the generic name for a raincoat: MacIntosh! Later 2 CONC the Mill was sold to him, and still later it was bought by the Dunlop 2 CONC company.
